The TB clinic at the Full Circle Health Emerald Clinic provides evaluation and treatment for patients who may have been exposed to tuberculosis or who have a positive TB test.
TB screening is recommended by the USPSTF for at-risk populations: https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/Page/Document/RecommendationStatementFinal/latent-tuberculosis-infection-screening
A positive TB test only shows that a person has been infected with TB bacteria. It does not tell whether the person has latent TB infection or if it has progressed to active TB disease. Other tests, such as medical evaluation, chest x-ray, and sometimes sputum samples, are needed to see whether a person has active TB disease.
There are two different kinds of tests that can be used to detect TB bacteria in the body: the tuberculin skin test (TST, or often called PPD), and TB blood tests (IGRAs).
TB blood tests are also called interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs). In the United States, available tests are the QuantiFERON® and the T-SPOT®. IGRA testing is often preferred over TST testing, especially in individuals at intermediate risk for TB, those who have received the TB vaccine (BCG vaccine), or those who have a difficult time returning for a second appointment to look for a reaction to the TST.
